Default Superbird Information

Plymouth Superbird

Plymouth's "Winged Warrior's" where designed for Nasser Speedways, and offered only in 1970. Plymouth built a total of 1,920 Superbirds. Including 3 engine options, The most popular was the basic Super Commando 440 V8 with a single four barrel carb rated at 375 bhp, then the 440 Six Pack rated at 390 bhp and the ultimate ordered by just "93 buyers", was the mighty 426 Hemi, rated at 425 bhp.

With a droop-snoot front end and a huge stabilizing tailfin, the Superbird could reach speeds well over 220mph. Their claim to fame came when Pete Hamilton raced to victory at Daytona ahead of Dodge and Ford. Of Chrysler’s 38 National wins in 1970, 21 of them were in a Superbird. With success, comes stipulations and NASCAR would change its regulations in 1971 ending the Superbird’s dominance on the racetrack. But not before a lesson in aero-dynamics was learned and applied to other models years after.
